Clay Artist - Home Dècor and Tableware ...

Jane began her career in the late '70s and early '80s creating and selling unique Batik paintings and large acrylic watercolours. In 1989 she commenced pottery studies at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario. At first she threw porcelain vessels and then moved on to press-mould and slip-cast techniques. A complete Chronology is available at this link.

Over the ensuing years Jane's tableware has evolved an antique, yet elegant look. Decorated with hand carved relief and stamped impressions, her designs focus on motifs inspired by nature, such as dragonflies, leaves, fish, and blue herons. Bowls, platters, trays, mugs, candle-holders and vases are glazed with earth colours such as sage, rust-speckle, antique white, light yellow and green.

In 1999, Jane's husband Dave started working full time building unique tile mirrors which are decorated with her handcarving and stamped impressions.

Dave studied mold-making and casting techniques in order to produce tiles for the mirrors, and eventually incorporated his knowledge of slip-casting to produce the mugs and smaller pieces that complete Jane's tableware line.

Jane's inspiration comes from travelling in Mexico. She has a passionate interest in tropical interior design and architecture. Her creative goal is to take elements from ancient cultures, incorporate them into modern design and create something new, that has both function and beauty.

Jane's work was featured in the "Artisan" section of "Canadian House & Home" magazine (October, 1999 edition). She also demonstrated her carving and pressing techniques, in a "Craft Feature" spot on the CHEX/Peterborough Evening News with Amy Terrill (May, 2001).
